FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Beginning your Deviant Journey FAQ
I'm trying to build the courage to attend a class. How do you make the studio feel safe for new members?
We get it. Movement with others can make us feel vulnerable, and trying something new can be terrifying. We’ve all been the new person in the room and understand what this feels like. At Deviant, we aim to ease your new member anxiety by offering:
- A welcoming community that prioritizes inclusivity.
- A warm and communicative staff that values individuality.
- A beautiful studio with a separate “chill” space for privacy when needed.
- A variety of talented and nurturing instructors who make members feel valued, successful, and included.
- An openness to member experience feedback
- A Code of Conduct to address interpersonal issues that may arise.
Is there a weight limit for your classes?
NO! Movement is our human birthright, and Deviant is a body-positive studio that embraces all body types. There is no ideal body shape, size, or appearance to attend a class. However, some of our classes require moderate upper body and core strength. Please review our class descriptions to read more about our strength requirements, but don’t let these requirements deter you from trying something new. Progress is different for everyone and our instructors excel at meeting our students at their ability level.
I haven't worked out in a while, where should I start?
Starting a new movement routine is challenging. Be proud of yourself for taking this first step! The majority of Deviant classes are beginner-friendly.
- Our Cardio Deconstructed is perfect for cardio lovers who would like to learn dance fundamentals to break down one sequenced routine.
- Our Beginner Level Chairlesque class teaches chair dance choreography in a slow and detailed manner.
- Barre is a music-driven strength & stretch class that offers a variety of effective modifications.
- Please note: Apparatus classes require moderate upper body & core strength. If it’s been a minute since you were active, please understand that you may find these classes extra challenging to start.
I used to Dance but I haven’t in a while, where is a good place to start?
Welcome, fellow dancer! Did you know that many of our members have some type of dance background and have reclaimed their relationship with dance at Deviant?! Deviant is a great option for fun, recreational dance for adults only. Our adults-only programming means that we provide classes to adults of all ages. Most of our members range in age from 20’s - 50’s, and some beyond. As a returning dancer, you can utilize any of our beginner-level classes and have the opportunity to level up as you progress.
I’m not good at learning choreography. Which classes should I take?
Most of our dance disciplines, including Chairlesque, Cardio Dance, Twerk & Wine, Jazz & Floor Play teach choreography combos that generally layer weekly. Some of our other classes are skill-based and do not require a heavy amount of memorization:
- Barre is a follow-the-leader type strength and stretch class that does not encompass choreography but does follow a sequence of movements.
- Our apparatus classes like Pole, Lyra, and Silks, learn simple flows and focus more on refining the skills needed to execute postures.
- If you are interested in dance but don’t want to learn a ton of choreography, our deconstructed class breaks down one cardio dance routine each Sunday. This class is detailed in deconstructing 3 to 5 sections of choreography, which repeat throughout the routine. Instructors provide fundamental direction, which helps to refine movements and understand the dynamics of the routine.

What does an Adults-only studio mean? I am under 18, can I still attend a class?
We DO NOT allow students under the age of 18 to attend. We sometimes make an exception for existing members to bring their teen family members into the studio, but this requires prior approval. Being an adults-only studio means that we can accommodate adults of all ages. Most of our members range in age from 20’s - 50’s and consider the Deviant studio a place where they can escape from everyday life.
What is the “No Outside Shoe Policy?”
Sneakers that have been worn outside are NOT permitted past the foyer. Upon entering the building, please remove your outside footwear before entering the studio common space. If you are wearing sneakers in a class they must be clean studio sneakers (shoes that have never been worn outside!)
Where can I store personal belongings during class?
When you enter the studio, there are coat/bag hooks along the right-side wall. There are also a few small lockers available in the office. Locks are not provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. Please do not bring bulky personal items like coats and bags into the studios. Those items should be left in the reception area. Deviant is not responsible for lost, stolen, or unattended items. Our Lost & Found items are placed above the lockers in the office.
Does Deviant rent out studio space for pop-up classes/workshops?
We do not offer studio rental to outside groups but if you are interested in being a Spotlight Instructor at Deviant, please e-mail your resume to Lisa at lisa@DeviantDanceTribe.com.

CLASS FAQ
How do I sign up for class?
Members can sign up for classes either directly through the DeviantDanceTribe.com website or via the Deviant App. If you choose to walk in before class starts, please understand that members without an account will need some time to register.
Step 1. CHECK OUT our Class Calendar for the month and see which class piques your interest. Our calendar can be found on the home page & booking page of our website.
Step 2. LOG-IN or CREATE an account on your computer or mobile device. If you haven't already done so, download the branded Deviant app to easily manage your bookings on the go.
Step 3. PURCHASE a Membership or Class Pack. Monthly memberships can be purchased as a one-time transaction and they recur automatically every month. All memberships and class packs can be used to book classes at a discounted rate instead of paying more for a single drop-in rate.
Step 4. BOOK YOUR CLASS using the branded Deviant app or via the booking page on our website. All members are required to book their class(es), regardless of membership status. This enables the studio to keep track of how many participants are in the class and helps to manage our waitlists, if necessary.
Step 5. Check your inbox (or sometimes junk folder) for your BOOKING CONFIRMATION and review the important information, especially if you are new to our Manlius studio location.
Step 6: Make sure you read through our studio policies.
What classes are offered regularly?
CARDIO DANCE, BARRE, POLE, LYRA, SILKS, AND CHAIRLESQUE are part of our regular class offerings. Additional classes are offered on a monthly or limited series/spotlight basis, please follow social media or check the online calendar!
How much does a class cost?
You can book a class at a discounted rate using a membership or class pack. Single-class Drop-in prices fall into two categories: 45-55min ($22) or 60-75min ($27) Deviant does offer a Trial membership called the Deviant Dabbler. The Dabbler allows new members to attend a month of unlimited classes for only $99!
How long are Deviant classes?
Classes range in length from 45 - 75 minutes.
How early should I show up for class?
We ask that you arrive up to 5-15 minutes before class starts to check in with the front desk and prepare for class.
What if I am running late to class?
If you are running late, please call or text the studio at 315-276-8657 to let us know. Please DO NOT contact instructors about lateness.
How does the waitlist work?
When a class is full, you’ll be given the option of joining the waitlist. Members do cancel, so many waitlisted members get promoted into the class. All waitlisted members will be notified when a space opens. Promotion into the class is first come, first serve.
How do I cancel my class?
The Deviant App is the easiest way to manage your account and bookings. Members can cancel independently without the assistance of the studio. Members have up to 4-hours before class to cancel or reschedule their booking without penalty. Late cancellations, less than 4 hours before class incur a $10 penalty for membership holders, and bookings made with a class-pack or drop-in will be charged for the class. Our studio has the right to cancel class for any reason.
For example, low attendance of fewer than 3 participants, illness, and bad weather may all result in a class being cancelled. In terms of weather, our studio follows the FM school district schedule. If school is cancelled or delayed in FM, our morning classes are cancelled.
What if I book a class and then don't show up?
If you don't early or late-cancel your booking and then don't show up, you will be charged for the class and penalized for your absence, no shows will incur a $15 penalty for membership holders, and bookings made with a class-pack or drop-in will be charged for the class. When you no-show a waitlisted class, you prevent someone on the waitlist from attending.
